Custom mini donuts for A Strange Loop, Tony Winner for Best Musical
Bites are Back on Broadway! This time we're taking on the most recent winner of the Tony for Best Musical, A Strange Loop! We're HUGE fans of this incredible show, and were simply over the moon to create these custom desserts for the cast + crew for the Lyceum Theatre in NYC! If you haven't seen it yet (what are you waiting for?) it coins itself as a "Big, Black, Queer-Ass American Broadway Show" and tackles themes from the queer experience, to racism in entertainment, to generational trauma - all while nodding to Grindr, poppers, and so many other gay NYC references. As a queer-owned bakery in Brooklyn, NYC - we couldn't wait to take our own Bite spin on this juicy musical. Here's some behind the scenes -
As an added bonus, we're also featured in their Big Black Queer Owned Marketplace - along with tons of other small, gay businesses.
Let's start with the menu! There aren't a ton of food references in the show, which is where we usually start for custom flavors. So instead with started with songs that we definitely wanted to include (Inner White Girl, Second Wave, Exile in Gayville). For Exile in Gayville, we knew that we wanted to include, ahem, dicks to be honest. We love the line "orgy on fire island" and were inspired by the ahem, rawness of our Blood Orange Flavor.
For Inner White Girl, we knew we wanted a flavor that was all white but also allowed us to use a lot of sparkles and sprinkles. Pina Coladas give us a basic white girl vibe for a drink, and knew that flavor always knocks it out of the park.
Second Wave made us want to have an all blue flavor, but we knew that we wanted to incorporate a "wave" element to the design. Second-wave feminism is problematic and "is at war" with Usher's identity as a gay Black man. So we added chocolate waves to clash and compliment with the mixed berry.
Poppers are referenced during Inwood Daddy and we just couldn't pass up the opportunity to create a poppers themed donut. RUSH is the most popular poppers brand (in our humble opinion) and we loved the idea of their bright red and yellow colors and staple lightening bolt on our Bites. When trying to come up with a flavor that featured red and yellow, we thought that the cherries were a nice innuendo and lemon is a rush of a flavor that gives a little "zing."
Obviously we couldn't deliver to A Strange Loop - a musical about a Black gay man, writing a musical about a Black gay man, about a musical about a Black Gay Man, about a musical..... - without including our own signature,
The Gay Donut! We think of it as our own little Strange Loop because we're a Queer-owned bakery making Queer donuts, that
raise money for Gay non-profits, who help Gay people, who make Gay businesses, and eat Gay Donuts..... It's all very gay.
